Malachys Diary page 4
After a few weeks the appointment arrived and we went for a week’s assessment. At the end pf the week we was told they would like Mal to stay as a weekly border going home at weekends. He received his first hearing aids and he started to learn his signs which helped him communicate his needs. It opened up a whole new world for him and he was taken off the medication.
Mal went from strength to strength and meet many good people in the time he was in the centre that really cared for and helped him. He had to leave just after his 12th birthday so we had to find a new school which would continue to meet his needs. We had been to visit a school for Deaf-Blind children. It was a good distance away which meant travelling each morning in a cab and returning each evening with me escorting, so we needed to ask our local education authority. They were not having any of it, as far as they were concerned his old school was fine even though they knew it did not meet his needs.
